Five Hizb-ut-Tahrir members convicted in Chelyabinsk
Four extremists will be jailed for six years and the fifth for 6.5 years in a high-security facility.
The activists of the outlawed organization apprehended by officers of the Chelyabinsk regional department of the Federal Security Service in August 2012 created a network of secret organizations in Chelyabinsk although they were aware of Russia’s ban on Hizb-ut-Tahrir operations.
“The network aimed to recruit new members for operations aimed at seizing power and changing the constitutional system of the Russian Federation through the affiliation of a part of its territory with the Great Caliphate, in particular, using military methods,” the department said.
The Hizb-ut-Tahrir activists were recruiting people who belonged to social and religious groups in 2009-2011. The recruits were introduced to extremist printed and video materials and urged to engage in extremist activities and to develop a negative attitude towards contemporary states, their constitutional systems and state borders at weekly religious meetings.
