Hizb ut-Tahrir denies recruiting mercenaries for fighting in Syria

Kiev, October 9, Interfax – The Hizb ut-Tahrir Islamic party has denied its involvement in the recruitment of mercenaries for the fighting in Syria and the financing of military conflicts.

“Hizb ut-Tahrir does not send people to Syria or finance the armed opposition in any part of the world because this is not an area of its activity… Throughout 60 years we have been a purely political party, all activities of which is limited to the ideological and political struggle,” head of the Hizb ut-Tahrir information office in Ukraine Fazyl Amzayev told a press conference in Kiev on Wednesday.

“We call your attention to the fact that the persons making such declarations [probably, he meant Crimean Tatar Majilis Chairman Mustafa Jemilev, who suggested the involvement of Hizb-ut-Tahrir in the recruitment of gunmen for the fighting in Syria] do not provide any evidence. These statements are unsubstantiated,” Amzayev stressed.

Hizb ut-Tahrir has been branded a terrorist organization in a number of Central Asian countries, Germany and Russia. Meanwhile, the United States has not yet listed Hizb ut-Tahrir as an organization supporting terrorism.
