Tajik national detained for Hizb ut-Tahrir ties

An alleged member of the banned Islamic organization Hizb ut-Tahrir has been detained in Moscow.

The Russian Interior Ministry said on November 14 that the detained man is a 25-year-old citizen of Tajikistan.

The name of the suspect was not made public.

The ministry said the man had been deported from Russia in the past for violating migration regulations but recently returned to the country using forged identity documents.

The man has allegedly propagated the ideas of Hizb ut-Tahrir among mosques in Moscow.

Hizb ut-Tahrir is a London-based Sunni political organization that seeks to unite all Muslim countries into an Islamic caliphate.

Russia’s Supreme Court banned Hizb ut-Tahrir in 2003, branding its supporters as “extremists.”
