Salafists take to Tunis streets for Islamic caliphate

Slogans against national dialogue, for sharia in Constitution

(ANSAmed) – TUNIS, NOVEMBER 8 – Hundreds of Salafist supporters from the Hizb Ettahrir party, the only authorised one from the fundamentalist movement, staged a protest in central Tunis Friday afternoon to demand an Islamic caliphate be set up and sharia be included in the Constitution being drawn up. The march was conducted peacefully under the watch of a massive security presence. It left after the Friday prayer from the El-Fath mosque, a fundamentalist stronghold that has been the scene of violent disturbances in the past.

”The Ummah demands an Islamic caliphate” and ”our Constitution is our Koran” were the most common slogans yelled out, along with ones against national dialogue between the majority and opposition groups, which they call ”a farce”.
