Police thwart Hizb ut-Tahrir rally in Dagestan – ministry

Police in Dagestan, a republic in Russia’s North Caucasus, on Saturday thwarted an attempt to hold a rally by people who identified themselves as members of Hizb ut-Tahrir, an international Islamist group whose activities are banned in Russia, Dagestan’s Interior Ministry said.

The ministry’s switchboard received a report that people traveling in 25 cars and waving Hizb ut-Tahrir flags had tried to break through a police checkpoint into the city of Kizlyar but were stopped by police, who arrested 12 of them, a ministry spokesman told Interfax.

The spokesman cited the detainees as saying they belonged to Hizb ut-Tahrir. Hizb ut-Tahrir, founded in Jerusalem in 1953, is banned in some countries. On February 14, 2003, the Russian Supreme Court declared the organization to be terrorist and banned its activities in Russia.
